DIscussion of treatment approaches for Major Depressive Illness by a UCSF and VAMC SF researcher and psychiatrist

Dr. Marton grew up in Berkeley, California and attended Head-Royce School in Oakland. He received his BA in Molecular and Cellular Biology with an emphasis in neurobiology at UC Berkeley in 2001. Subsequently, he attended the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) at UC San Diego School of Medicine where he completed his MD as well as his PhD in Neuroscience in 2010. His PhD thesis focused on understanding the neurobiology underlying the detection and response to pheromones in a mouse model system. After medical school, he went on to complete his residency training in psychiatry at UC San Francisco in 2014 and subsequently conducted research as a fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Vikaas Sohal studying the neural circuitry of the prefrontal cortex and how it may go awry in severe mental illness. Currently he is a faculty member in the UCSF Department of Psychiatry and provides clinical services at both San Francisco VA Medical Center and UCSF Medical Center. His current area of interest is in using neurostimulation techniques such as ECT and rTMS, as well as other novel neuroscience-based strategies, to treat mood disorders including major depression and bipolar disorder.
