Lauren Tompkins, Ph.D.

Marin Science Seminar Presentation: "Extra dimensions, mini black holes and.. Pink Elephants?: Exciting times ahead at the Large Hadron Collider" (March 25, 2015) Get the flyer here.

After the nobel-prize generating discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland shut down for two and a half years. Dr. Tompkins will talk about what scientists hope to discover when the upgraded accelerator comes back online this spring: more higgs bosons, super symmetry, extra dimensions, mini black holes and, perhaps, pink elephants.

Lauren Tompkins grew up in California, Texas and Illinois. She went to college at UC Berkeley and loved it so much that, after spending a post-bac year in France, she returned to Berkeley for her PhD. She then headed to the University of Chicago to do postdoctoral research, and was very happy to return to sunny California this fall as an assistant professor at Stanford University. Her research focusses on understanding sub atomic particles and what they can tell us about the fundamental structure of matter.
